Who we are

Southern New Hampshire University’s story is all about transformation.

We were founded in 1932 as a small accounting school that offered night classes to adult learners in Manchester, NH. For the last 90 years, we’ve questioned the narrative of who belongs in college — and written a better one. We’ve expanded access to degree programs and forged new pathways to learner success. And today, we're an innovative leader in online education serving over 180,000 students around the world.

Find out what transformation means to our staff — and what it could mean for you.

A mission that moves us

As a university built for people, not for profit, we're driven by one powerful mission: transforming lives through education.

Our people are curious. They’re tenacious. They’ve got heart. They’re not afraid to say, “Let’s try something different.” And they’re connected by their vision of a better world for all. Ready to join us?

A history of transformation

1932

Starting small

SNHU opens its doors in Manchester, NH, as the humble, two-room New Hampshire Accounting and Secretarial School. We begin offering evening classes taught by experienced, educated faculty, and students can start on any Monday of the year.

1941

Supporting our military

The United States enters World War II, and SNHU shifts its focus to supporting service members. Soldiers spend their days in class and nights on base while disabled veterans prepare for life after the military.

1969

Becoming a modern college

New Hampshire Accounting and Secretarial school tries on a new name — New Hampshire College. Equipped with accreditation and degree-granting authority, our enrollment reaches nearly 1,000 students.

1971

Making moves

Quickly outgrowing the downtown Manchester location, New Hampshire College moves out of its rented space and into the location we occupy today: a picturesque 300-acre campus along the Merrimack River.

1995

Launching online classes

This year goes down in the books as a big one — New Hampshire College launches its internet-based distance learning program. (Sound familiar?)

2001

Rebranding big time

New Hampshire College becomes Southern New Hampshire University, expanding its programs — and campus — significantly. Our distance learning program sees explosive growth, reaching 8,000 enrollments in over 23 time zones.

2013

Forging new pathways

SNHU expands access to higher ed with the launch of College for America (CfA). The program leverages partnerships to introduce competency-based education (CBE) to students for whom college feels out of reach.

2017

Going global for good

SNHU launches the Global Education Movement (GEM): the first large-scale online learning initiative for refugees. Born out of partnerships with in-country organizations, it delivers high-quality, low-cost education for displaced learners.

Today

Continuing our mission

SNHU serves over 180,000 students and offers 250+ career-focused degree programs, online and on campus. A lot’s changed over the years, but we’re still dedicated to the same mission: making education accessible and unlocking opportunity for all.
