Southern New Hampshire University is seeking student employees to fill the role of Literacy Tutor for our partner organization Reading Partners. Reading Partners is seeking responsible, patient, and motivated Federal Work Study students to support our one-on-one tutoring program. Using Reading Partners’ scripted, evidence-based curriculum, Literacy Tutors use our curriculum to work one-on-one with students either in person, or via our online tutoring platform using video conferencing. Online Literacy Tutors can provide tutoring from anywhere in the USA and will be paired with students receiving tutoring at our partner school sites. Tutoring with Reading Partners requires absolutely no experience, as we provide all the necessary materials and the ongoing training and support of a Reading Partners’ team member who is on-site with the students.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work one-on-one with elementary school students at one or more of our partner schools using Reading Partners’ structured curriculum.
  • Review session notes prior to each lesson and complete notes after each session.
  • Federal Work Study students typically commit to 5-20 sessions per week, and each tutoring session is a little over an hour (including session prep time and follow-up time).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in classes as part of a SNHU degree program
  • Work study part of financial aid package
  • Students with work study may be prioritized
  • Passionate about early literacy and supporting young learners
  • Commit to a consistent weekly tutoring schedule during school hours (Monday - Thursday, approximately 8 am - 3 pm local time with limited after school sessions available). Preference is given to students who can commit to the full program year (through May/June). Consistent attendance and punctuality is a must!
  • Attend a Reading Partners tutor orientation before working with students
  • Sign-off on Reading Partners’ Liability Waiver and Media Release and follow our Tutor Code of Conduct
  • Complete and pass a background check (paid for by Reading Partners)
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward learning, diversity, and students
  • Be open to feedback and coaching. Have patience and empathy for students while holding high expectations
  • Be able to interact effectively with students
  • Be responsive and center the students’ learning needs:
    • Get to know the students and honor their experiences.
    • Regularly look for opportunities to listen to and learn from students
    • Invest in students’ success and support students in achieving their full potential
    • Avoid making assumptions or letting assumptions influence your interactions with students
    • Use affirming language that validates the student’s feelings and/or experiences in and outside of the reading center
    • Remain open and engaged when interacting with tutor and student read aloud texts and Reading Partners’ social emotional learning curriculum
    • Exercise patience while working with young learners
  • Remain flexible around changes that may occur to the schedule that are outside of Reading Partners’ control
  • For online tutors: Have access to reliable, password protected wifi, PC, Mac, or Chromebook computer with a functioning webcam and microphone.

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, between 8am-7pm

Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $13.00 - $15.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations.
